As a mom of an empty nest - there is nothing more separating, more lonesome, more feeling left out and alone as not having communication with the very ones that you took care of for 18+ years. Yes, leaving home is a right of passage, and growing up process, a time of finding one's own self - but it is also a time of responsibility and respect. It only takes a few minutes of time to answer a call, give an update, share your day, see how things are going back home, and show that you care. Having an empty nest leaves a hole in your heart that can never be plugged without that human contact. The only thing that comes remotely close is the sound of your child's voice. I pray that my kids will continue to keep me close in their hearts, involve me in their lives, respect me to let me know that they are ok and safe, and choose to use that cellphone of theirs in a respectable way - and stay connected with their dad and I. I pray that other kids will think about how this communication imparts on their own parents dark hole and choose to step up and keep that communication open because they want to not because they have to. It's all part of growing up. It's all part of being respectful.
